Think Tank’s latest on Lift Truck Power

Veronica Grasso from Hyster Europe reveals the latest thinking on lift truck power options by the company’s engineering Think Tank. She claims there is no “one size fits all” and gives compelling reasons why some options are better than others in different industry applications.

Veronica Grasso is Product Manager, Counterbalance Products EMEA for Hyster Europe.

When to choose lithium-ion lift trucks

Lithium-ion is becoming a popular power option for lift trucks, particularly in the food industry where operations are mostly indoors and there is a priority to reduce contamination. Lithium-ion has no acid which could spill and no fumes – hydrogen and other gases can be produced by lead acid, which are unwelcome in clean food production and storage areas.

With no equalising, watering or cleaning required, lithium-ion batteries do not need the high levels of maintenance that their lead acid counterparts require. Lower maintenance helps to reduce cost and improve the reliability of battery life which is important in the busy food manufacturing and storage industry.

The big difference with lithium-ion is that it allows for opportunity charging during planned breaks and lunch time. This ‘top up’ approach can simplify operations as you only need one battery, not two. Plus, over a period of years, lithium-ion may work out cheaper in the right application, with lower total battery costs.

With good availability and accessible prices, it is expected that more applications will start to adopt lithium-ion power options. It is likely to be particularly appealing for new sites, as you don’t need to build a dedicated charging room, so can make significant space savings.

However, there are infrastructure considerations which will turn some businesses off. For example, older sites may need wiring changes to accommodate the power needs and charging locations. Draw on the electric supply is another consideration. Lead acid batteries charge slowly over a long period while lithium-ion options charge quickly and need more power. Infrastructure needs to accommodate these requirements.

Why lead acid batteries are still best for many

Electric lift trucks with lead acid batteries are still often considered the best option for many indoor logistics operations such as in a pallet network. Applications benefit from efficiency and performance comparable to LPG/diesel alternatives and a potentially lower cost of ownership.

Typically these are multishift operations so forklift batteries can be exchanged easily between shifts without regular opportunity charges. However, these applications need the space for a charging room and to avoid downtime, must have strict processes in place to make sure batteries are charged to keep operations running. They also need a weekly maintenance and equalisation schedule.

Trucks like a 48V 1.6 to 2 tonne capacity lift truck or a 2.5 tonne 80V forklift, such as the Hyster® J series are common in pallet network and indoor logistics operations. A number of different battery exchange options also help to speed up and simplify the battery exchange process by meeting specific application requirements.

Why LPG lift trucks are a powerful choice

In today’s beverage industry, lift trucks tend to be multi-purpose, handling products from the bottling plant or storage, and on to transport.

The lift trucks need to be flexible and available at all times during long, busy shifts, with especially high demand in summer. Such intensive businesses can’t afford to lose productivity from any lift truck, where typically you find fleets of 10-12 forklifts.

This is where LPG is particularly well suited. There is high energy content in each gas bottle giving the lift trucks full power through a shift until the bottle is empty. In just a few minutes the bottle can easily be replaced, unlike batteries that need switching or charging and consequently require stricter processes and the space for charging rooms.

For the beverage industry, LPG is also a “cleaner fuel” with minimal soot or particulate matter so it’s suitable for indoor use and use inside a trailer. With intense summer work demands and high temperatures in the yard, batteries would become hot and less efficient, whereas LPG has the advantage of not being adversely affected by hot weather.

Most beverage loads are palletised at about 1 tonne and often multi pallet handlers (handling 2, 4 or 6 pallets) are used. This demands full power, responsive control and speed at all times and Hyster Europe would typically recommend a 3-3.5T lift truck from the Fortens® range.

Where diesel lift trucks thrive

Building material storage or retail operations are usually outdoor applications and are a good example of where diesel trucks thrive in all weathers. Drivers can work the trucks very hard throughout a shift and leave them outside overnight, coming back the next morning ready to go in the rain, snow or summer sun.

Electric trucks are often less suited to these applications due to the infrastructure and process requirements, while diesel lift trucks offer good uptime and a low cost of operation with an easily available, low cost fuel. The Hyster® H2.5XT is designed for these everyday applications with the advantage of being simple to maintain and fix.

And finally… is everyone destined to use fuel cells?

In certain applications with the right infrastructure, fuel cells may be the best power option and Hyster Europe provides this as yet another option. However, it is believed there are still less than 1,000 fuel cell lift trucks operating in Europe, and this number is growing slowly. For most operations, fossil fuels and batteries are here to stay – at least for the next decade.

Hyster Europe can provide specialist advice on the best power option for specific industry applications. Contact the local Hyster® distributor or visit www.hyster.com.

Need a face mask? These local businesses are selling for a good cause

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Starting Monday, Harris County is requiring residents to wear face masks in public. The order is in effect for the next 30 days.

So, while you are required to cover your face, why not give back at the same time?

SEE ALSO: Harris County mask order goes into effect today

Several local designers are sewing masks that give back, donating all or a portion of sales to first responders, hospitals, or food charities.

Houston wedding gown designer David Peck

is offering buy-one-give-one fabric masks with a pocket inside for a HEPA filter. For every mask sold, one will be donated to a front-line responder.

The company has sold 2,400 buy-one-give-one masks to date. Masks cost $20.00- $30.00.

Houston Fashion designer Chloe Dao

is also selling cloth masks, ranging from $12.00- $16.00.

Funds from sales go toward their efforts to supply Houston medical workers with masks.

Athletic clothing company Greyson

is selling $18.00 microfiber masks.

For every mask purchased, a mask will be donated to essential workers and people in need in Detroit and New York, two of the hardest hit cities.

You can support your favorite NFL team and protect yourself and others at the same time.

Fanatics

is selling this three-pack of Houston Texans masks for $24.99. Proceeds support the CDC Foundation.

Finally,

Houston-based fashion designer Christy Lynn

is offering buy-one-give-one masks supporting Houston Methodist Hospital. Masks are $18.00.

Remember, these are not N95 masks, but many of them have the option to add filters or are designed to be used over a medical-grade mask.

Business as usual Motive power needed to keep businesses running

The current coronavirus epidemic has demonstrated the importance of the supply chain to the country.

The logistics industry is used to dealing with seasonal surges in interest but it has never had to cope with the level of demand created by COVID-19.

With UK warehouses dependent on forklifts, it is imperative those forklifts’ power sources are maintained to keep businesses running and ensure the UK does not grind to a halt.

EUROBAT, the association for European manufacturers of industrial batteries, believes that battery manufacturers and their supply chain play an essential role in the management of the crisis.

“We are of the opinion that the battery industry qualifies as a critical manufacturing and/or essential industry that should remain in operation – on an appropriately modified basis – to provide the products and services that enable the continued operation of critical life-saving infrastructure and services,” the association said in a statement.

The Ri charging process of Selectiva devices from Fronius is a particularly gentle and efficient way to power traction batteries. The effective inner resistance (Ri) of the batteries – which depends on various factors such as their age, temperature and state of charge – is recorded, so that the level of charge for each battery is exactly what is required. This minimises harmful warming, maintains battery capacity and extends the service life.

Where electric forklifts are likely to be idle for a prolonged period during the COVID-19 pandemic, appropriate care is vital to keep batteries in peak condition.

Stuart Browne, Operations Director-Sales and Service at Hoppecke UK, recommends the following steps: make sure that batteries, including any spares that are in use, are fully charged. Once charged, top up batteries with deionised or distilled water to the correct level. If a battery is left on a truck and not connected to a charger, disconnect the forklift DC plug from the truck.

The current huge demand for e-commerce deliveries will eventually subside. Life will return to normal, sooner or later.

Until then, motive power suppliers will provide the juice to keep supply chains moving.

It takes all sorts to make an army. The nation has stood outside its front doors applauding the heroes of the NHS, and rightly so. But there is a whole network of people involved in keeping the nurses on the wards and the food on the shelves. Motive power is a part of that network and shouldn’t be forgotten

Houston closing in on 2 full months with COVID-19

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- As Mayor Sylvester Turner prepares to open Houston's sixth coronavirus testing site to the public, the city - and moreover, the state - faces an important transition in the week ahead.

Harris County's 30-day mask mandate began Monday, covering both unincorporated parts of the county and the city limits.

Now, Turner faces additional guidance from Austin on how to reopen the state wider. Gov. Greg Abbott is due to speak several hours after Turner and U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee's joint news conference on the new testing site.

Abbott promised to advise about

additional openings

, which could have a profound effect on whether the Houston area can truly flatten curve.

As of Monday morning, the city confirmed 3,284 cases in nearly two months of the pandemic's presence in Houston. Over the weekend, the death toll went up by seven to 42. Before the weekend, Turner also announced the first city death involving a patient with no underlying health issues.

And in the middle of this all, Houston and Harris County are due to see their "Stay Home, Work Safe" order expire. Turner told reporters Friday that he will defer to the governor for next steps.

Turner and Jackson Lee's event is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. in southeast Houston at the Barnett Sports Complex at 6800 Fairway. You can watch the event live in this post.
