In spite of the state’s order allowing restaurants reopen at 25% capacity, these restaurants are sticking to takeout until at least May 18
On Friday, May 1, restaurants across the state of Texas will be allowed to open their dining rooms for the first time since mid-March. Following an order from Texas governor Greg Abbott, a slew of Houston restaurants are planning to welcome back customers on Friday, but there are also plenty that are planning to wait at least a few more weeks.
Scope out the list below for a line-up of spots that are sticking to takeout only, at least for now. Some spots plan to reopen on May 18, when phase two of Abbott’s “Open Texas” plan goes into effect, while others are still hesitant to announce a reopening date.

- Underbelly Hospitality — All of Chris Shepherd’s restaurants will remain takeout only for now. “We want to take our time to understand exactly what we need to do to ensure the safety of our team and our guests,” Shepherd said in a statement. “In the meantime, we’re increasing our offerings — by increasing our curbside hours and adding more ready-to-eat hot items and salads to prepare to open our dining rooms.”
- Mala Sichuan Bistro — Taking a “wait and see” approach, and will continue to offer its full menu for takeout and delivery at its Montrose, Bellaire, and Katy locations.
- Hugo’s — Waiting for the second phase of Gov. Abbott’s “Open Texas” plan, which is currently set to go into effect on May 18; takeout and delivery will continue.
- Backstreet Cafe — Waiting for the second phase of Gov. Abbott’s “Open Texas” plan; takeout and delivery will continue.
- Ramen Tatsu-Ya — Will continue to offer takeout service from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
- Brennan’s of Houston — Will “play it safe” and wait for the second phase of Abbott’s “Open Texas” plan; takeout and delivery will continue.
- Squable — Will continue curbside pickup service for now, but no decision has been made on when Squable will reopen.
- Rosie Cannonball — Will resume takeout service on May 5 with curbside pickup and delivery.
- Bravery Chef Hall — Will continue to offer takeout and delivery through May 18, with plans to reopen then.
- Kata Robata — Will continue curbside pickup service daily, but has not announced a reopening date for its dining room.
